When work starts piling up, the instinct is often to add people. Sometimes that is necessary. But if responsibilities overlap, processes are unclear and decisions are poorly defined, adding headcount can simply add another layer of complexity.
Before recruiting, map the work. Understand what needs to be done, who owns it, what information is required and where the bottlenecks are. Then decide whether the gap is one of capacity, capability, structure or process. The right answer may be a person — but it may also be a better way of working.
